Black Eggs, also known as 1,000 year old eggs (Century Eggs) in the west, are preserved in an alkaline solution; they are then painted a pink colour. It is normal for the eggs to emit an unusual odor. To the untrained nose it may smell like the eggs have passed their use by date, actually this is quite normal and are safe for consumption.
